So, are we bound to having major workforce gaps across our most important industries? Or do we finally have an incentive large enough to provide the automation boost the UK desperately needs to catch up.

When we surveyed non-British workers on how easy they felt it would be to replace them with a British worker, most (57 per cent) said it would be difficult or very difficult. Significantly, it was EU workers who were most likely to say that a replacement would be difficult: 65 per cent said it would be difficult or very difficult. Given that it is EU workers who say that they are most likely to leave the UK within the next five years, the message that critical skills could be hard to find in the short to medium term is reinforced.
