Developing future models of care in the UK

As with many regions in the UK, West Hertfordshire’s health and care economy faces significant sustainability challenges. The population is growing, life expectancy is increasing and with that comes the challenge of complex care needs. The cost of providing care services is rising and the funding available will not keep up with increasing demand.

Herts Valleys Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) — the body responsible for planning care in the area — asked Deloitte to help it develop a future model of care to ensure local health and social care services are of high quality but also both clinically and financially sustainable.

With multiple organisations and stakeholders across the health and social care system we knew it was critical to build a consensus on a vision for the future. We put in place a programme of engagement with clinicians, operational leads, patients and the public. Patients have commented that our approach has been “open and constructive”, while commissioners believe it has “energised” the clinicians and professionals involved.

With all stakeholders now aligned in their understanding of both the challenges and ambitions, we are helping design future models of care that tackle the issues identified in the CCG’s Case for Change survey – such as access to GPs, improving home care, integrating health and social care, and connecting the services that deal with both physical and mental health issues in the local communities.

“Deloitte has brought its expertise to help us identify the path from launch through to the implementation of solutions. It has engaged with senior stakeholders and clinicians across the system to obtain buy-in and agreement between organisations on the challenges we face.”
