Doncaster Children’s Services Trust: Improving care for young people

Doncaster Children’s Services Trust is an independent, not-for-profit organisation responsible for the day-to-day running of local safeguarding services for children. The Department for Education appointed Deloitte to support the trust’s establishment. Launched in September 2014, the trust looks at new and innovative ways to deliver social care and support services to children and young people, with the aim of transforming social work in the borough and marking a significant break with the council’s recent history of child-protection failure. The trust is the first professionally led, independent social work organisation in the UK delivering the full range of safeguarding services for children.

Our team worked with the council and other stakeholders to set up the trust’s operational and financial systems. We coordinated programme management and ensured that the transfer of services, systems and budgets to the trust was safe, secure and delivered successfully against tight timescales. The chairman of the trust commented: “Without your assistance it would not have been possible to meet our target operational date in such good order, nor to have the strong foundations upon which to further build our organisation.”

And in the words of an advanced case practitioner:

“It’s exciting to be part of this set-up; looking at new and innovative ways to deliver social care and support services to children and young people…. The trust has made it clear that it’s determined to break with the past, and if old ways of delivering services aren’t fit for purpose then new ones will be found.”

Sue Durrant, commenting in The Guardian, April 2015.
