Crossrail: 10,000 workers, 40 sites, 14 miles of tunnels

How do you manage Europe’s largest construction project?

Crossrail is a new, cross-London railway that will link Heathrow Airport, the West End, the City of London and Canary Wharf when it opens in 2018. It’s an extremely complicated project, involving over 10,000 individuals based at over 40 sites across London, tunnelling for 14 miles underneath one of the world’s busiest cities, with costs peaking at £5–6 million a day.

To demonstrate to government that the railway could be delivered to time and to budget, we helped Crossrail design a world-class programme controls function. This included defining and implementing the organisation, processes and technology needed to manage cost, schedule, risk, reporting, contract administration, document control and finance.

To date, our work at Crossrail has spanned four years across numerous projects and has – at different stages - involved nearly 100 Deloitte professionals across Consulting and Corporate Finance.

“Deloitte has taken the lead working in partnership with our own teams, our other partner organisations and many suppliers to deliver first-class programme controls systems and a business organisation fit for purpose. This has enabled me and my team to lead and control the largest and most complex construction programme in Europe.”
