Retail: Expelling the myth of high street’s demise

“Where did all the shops go?” was the first counter-intuitive commentary against the prevailing sense of doom and gloom about the state of the UK high street. Deloitte’s Restructuring, Real Estate and Analytics teams brought together their experience and insight to produce a market-leading report into the impact of 27 high profile retail administrations on the UK high street since 2009. The research was the first of its kind in demonstrating that, far from being dead, the high street appears to be showing great resilience and a capacity for reinvention, with 70 percent of retail units affected by administration having since been re-occupied. The report was also unique in showing the long term impact of retail insolvency and eventual regeneration.

Such was the credibility and impact of the research that it drew over 130 pieces of broadcast coverage, including features on Radio 4’s flagship Today programme, BBC television news and front page headlines in Retail Week and The Telegraph’s business section.
